Commissions Unit: Brief

Today we got the brief for our other project for the next two terms. For this one we have to choose one of these options:

Work Placement option:

Students undertake a sustained period (3-4 weeks) of work placement within a media related company, or on a media related production.
This placement should be with one organisation.
You will be required to sign a learning agreement stating the nature of the placement and your hours of commitment. We will assist you in securing the position, but the onus is on the student to locate the opportunity.
You will be required to maintain contact with the course throughout the placement period, making sure that commitments to the Studio Production Unit and Theory sessions are maintained.
There will be certain dates (outlined in your learning agreement) that you cannot miss at university.

Commission option:

Students undertake a simulated professional project for an external commissioner. This can take many forms, but in the past has typically been a video project for a company or organisation. Past examples have been commercials for local companies. Promos for a rock/pop band. Information Videos for charities. We will assist you in securing the position, but the onus is on the student to locate the opportunity.  You will be required to sign a learning agreement stating the nature of the commission and your hours of commitment.
You will be required to maintain contact with the course throughout the commission period, making sure that commitments to the Studio Production Unit and Theory sessions are maintained.
There will be certain dates (outlined in your learning agreement) that you cannot miss at university.

Professional Case Study option:

Students undertake a sustained period of research into a particular professional, who is working in the field the student is personally interested in. You would be required to examine their work, and how this relates to your own practice so far. It is not a bio piece – you are challenged with finding out what it means to be professional through the investigation of this particular person. Alongside this case study, you are also required to produce a professional CV and showreel of your work.

Due to Chris and I working on the ACT Project, we have decided to take control and use this for our Commissions Unit. Chris will be editing the French film, and I'll be editing the footage from Cambridge.
