Digital News Unit: Sports News Research

Once we decided to create a sports channel, I felt inclined to research some existing ones. The main sports one, which features on television with its own channel is Sky Sports News:

As you can see above, the channel has a presenter/anchor as well as on screen graphics including a 'news ticker' which is located on the bottom of the screen. This convention is popular in news pieces as it contains news stories scrolling along the screen while the news anchor is talking. I believe this is a good feature, and one we should use, as not only does it look professional, but it also keeps the audience interested. On the other hand, it could have a negative effect on our news channel, as some may argue that it would distract the viewers, therefore missing what the presenter is saying and consequently getting lost in the main stories.

Another aspect I noticed was the use of a teaser/introduction. After the opening credits, they gave short introductions to what is coming up on that particular segment. I believe this would work well with our news project as we have multiple stories and want the audience to know that straight away. Sky Sports News made these parts very short, which means they don't want to give too much away too early. So we have a lot to think about in terms of the layout and structure of our news channel.
