Pre-Production Major Project: Football Pitch Recce

One of the main locations in the script, is the football pitch in which they play their matches on. I have been studying a pitch near where I live and I put the idea across to Aimee who has then followed it up. There are many reasons why I have envisioned this particular pitch for our project, one of the main ones being the condition of it:

In my opinion we need to have a pitch that hasn't got the perfect surface like at professional grounds.. When people say "Sunday League" to me, I instantly think of muddy pitches on a cold winters day. Having experienced sunday league football myself for a number of years, I know what to look out for. We want to emphasise the point that this is "rubbish" football, and there is no better way than having a pitch with a few holes and sandy parts. The beauty of this pitch in Rainham is that it has these holes/pits, however it also has a nice surface too, meaning we have both options there if we need them. Having different options at a location is great for a director who wants to be creative, which is why this would suit me and my role on the project. My choices/ideas are endless.

This location also contains pitch markings, meaning the audience will be able to tell that this is a proper pitch used by sunday league teams in real life. This also helps to reinforce the genre of realism we want this show to contain. Not only are we placing characters in real life situations, however we also want the props/locations to be as real as possible too. The pitch is home to one of the Rainham teams who play in a Medway league, so some audience members will be able to relate to it. I believe having the lines/markings would be much better than having a normal park with just plain grass as it looks a lot more professional.

Another key aspect I thought about was the location of the pitch.. The reason I put this idea forward is because this one is located in a fantastic place! Not only is it located right next to Rainham train station, but it also has a car park beside it. This means our cast and crew can travel and access the pitch easily, whether it's by car or train. Having the car park beside the pitch also means the kit can be on site and won't need to be carried everywhere. Having my house being a five minute walk away will also come in handy for food, shelter and bags too.

Overall this is a fantastic find, and with it being public, permission is at a minimum. I can really imagine the script being held at this location, with myself directing shots in my head already.

Pre Production Major Project: Auditions Research

I've never constructed an auditions process before, therefore I have looked into the vital tips I need to carry out a successful auditions system. First of all, I need to think of how I'm going to set up the room:

There are important things to remember when setting up the room, one of them being the comfort of the talent performing. This isn't an X-Factor type audition where they need to sing to an audience and being watched by millions of people worldwide.. This project is not on the same scale therefore I can reduce these aspects. The room I will be using will also be quite small so the less props, the better. The picture above shows a room with 5 people (including the auditionee) a couple of mics and a camera. The camera is vital as I want the rest of my team to see who they'll be working with, as well as having the opportunity to watch the auditions again (especially if I'm unsure or stuck between a few for the same role). In terms of people, I would like just Aimee and I in the room as we are in charge of casting, and I believe too many people would distract the talent of performing to their full potential.

The next bit I've been researching are the different types of auditions, i.e what I want the talent to do. I've come across a few different types, each having pros and cons:

Monologue Audition

Pros - Get to see if they can follow my directions the second time, it's one on one, plus we get to see who has prepared for the audition compared to those who haven't

Cons - Some actors could be very good at preparing the audition due to having the piece beforehand, however they may not be the best at acting

Cold Read Audition

Pros - The actors get to see the script right away, plus we would be able to see who was right for the part directly from the script meaning more likely for success

Cons - This wouldn't be memory based, therefore it would be hard to distinguish who is good at memorising lines and in turn remembering their parts for the project

Improv Based Audition

Pros - Good for group auditions, seeing who works well in a team and who has the creative spark to think on the spot

Cons - May not suit certain actors, and again won't be able to tell if they're good at remembering lines

There are pros and cons for every type of audition, however due to not seeing how good the actors are at memorising lines for the latter two, I have come to the decision that we're going to use monologues as part of our auditions process as I believe this will give us the best idea on how the talent do under the circumstances they'll be in on the actual shoot.

Major Project: Idea

Helen, Chris and I have been talking about making a football related film for years now.. So what better chance to make one, then for our major project! This will be our biggest one yet, therefore we have made a description of the idea so we can get potential backers and interest:

What is Sunday League?

Football. It's the most popular sport in the world. Played and watched by over 3 billion people and while Ronaldo, Messi and Co get all the fame and glory playing at the best stadiums with the best match officials, your local team is probably playing on a pitch with a dog turd or two, an overweight referee and someone's dad as the linesman. Welcome to the world of SUNDAY LEAGUE.

The series follows the fictional Grove Green FC - the laughing stock of Kent's 2nd Division and struggling for a team. The captain's a lady's man, The centre back's a red card magnet and their striker has never scored a goal. After the recent mass exodus of players and their manager to a rival team, we join the lad's determined to turn their luck around.

The show centres around 4 main characters:

Dean - The Captain. A talented footballer with an eye for a lady. Or 2. Or 3. He's a man on a mission to get the team back to their winning ways. Starting with a search for a manager.

Tom - Dean's Best friend. A tough tackling centre back with a temper that often get's him sent for an early shower. Allegedly, he's found himself a Solid 10 girlfriend - although no one has ever met her...

Nath - The Goalkeeper. A level headed, History student with a secret. Shy and lacking confidence until he hits the pitch where he takes balls to the face like a champion.

Ollie - The joker. Every team has an Ollie. The person you stick up front out of the way to minimise the damage caused when they are near their own goal. Hopeless with women but the life and soul of any party.

This is a series we believe has buckets of potential and legs. Lovely, lovely legs! I mean they are slightly hairy but what can you do. It's something we are incredibly passionate about. And YOU could help make this small project grow into something massive! We hope to push this project upon completion into pilot film festivals.

The pilot episode is to be filmed in February 2016 but are writing a full 6 episode series.

What makes this Unique?

We are telling a story that anyone who's encountered non league football - Women or Men will relate to.

And.. It's written by a female - How many male led sitcom's can say that?

Pre-Production Major Project: Title Sequence Research

I have been researching different title sequences to get inspiration for our major project, after careful analysis I've found some I believe will work for our project, and others that wouldn't at all:

Desperate Housewives is a very popular programme in both America and the UK, however the title sequence seems very dated and would take away the modern theme of our project if we were to choose to make something similar. I believe the non-diegetic soundtrack is quite slow, which would eliminate the dynamic feel we want the show to have.

I found this one which I believe could work well with our theme:

As you can see in the video above, the screen gets split up into different sections, showing different parts of the characters. This would work well for our project, as we have characters on and off the pitch, therefore showing different characteristics in different locations. One segment could be their life on the pitch, while another can be their everyday life.

I also like the parallel non-diegetic soundtrack, which I believe could help get our genre across if we find something similar.

After this research, I can safely say that we need to make a dynamic title sequence which contains clips of both football and everyday life so we can reinforce the theme of our project.

Pre-Production Major Project Research: Contacting Director

After realising that our major project is similar to the popular TV series "The Inbetweeners" I have decided to look into the main director - Ben Palmer. He directed 11 episodes between 2009 and 2010 making him the most used director on the programme.

He has also directed TV series like "Bo Selecta" and "Star Stories" which are all of a similar genre as our project. Im hoping his comedic directing style will help me achieve what I want in our project; therefore I emailed his agent to see if I can get some tips.

Im hoping to get a response soon so I can put these experienced tips to the test and improve on past projects

Pre-Production Major Project: Directing Research - Teamwork/Communication

I've been researching into the role of directing and how important teamwork is on completing a successful project. I have learnt that listening to the talent I'm filming is just as important as communicating with my production team, as they are the ones producing the goods on screen. The relationship between actors and directors are key, and it needs to be strong/positive to get the best out of both roles:

“The director is the person who calls all of the camera shots and gives direction to the cameras. The really good directors listen to their talent and follow what they are talking about and relay that message to the camera operators instead of just cutting a show the way the director wants to. TV is all about collaboration.” Fanguy, School Video News

Not only am I in charge of all the camera shots, but making sure my crew and talent know exactly what they're doing and at the right times. Doing this research has made me realise that even though I'm in charge and know what I want, it's still valuable to listen to the actors and their opinions, otherwise they may not feel comfortable and therefore not perform to the best of their abilities.

When we come to shoot the pilot, as well as the opening titles and trailers.. I'm going to make sure I use this research by listening to all my team including the talent, as this would create a good team morale and therefore enhance the team ethic.
