Commissions Unit: Debrief

After the French trip we had a debrief via Skype so we can evaluate our work and plan ahead for the Cambridge trip.

We discussed ideas and made some executive decisions in terms of time management and job roles

This turned out to be very successful, and I will definitely do this again for future projects as it increased my confidence and understanding of the project ahead.

Studio Production Unit: Pitch

Danny Hewitt’s Pitch

Idea

Music, singing, live band, comedy, competition
Two people play 3 rounds of different music based games, each trying to score as many points as possible

Programme Title

      “Let’s Cut To The Bass”
Play on words (let’s cut to the chase)
       Music theme
Other ideas – “Word You Believe It”
                                           “Close But No Singer”

Contestants

2 contestants battling against each other
  Male and female for equality
  Gender competition
Quite young (similar age to presenter) for consistency as well as for the target audience

Round 1 – Number 1’s

They choose a genre (rock, pop, etc) and then a list of songs appear and they have to choose which one wasn’t number 1
Each genre contains a list of songs from the same year, but one of them won’t be a number 1
Points – 1 point for the correct answer
Bonus point if they say the year of the songs

Round 2 – Name That Tune

Bass guitar (from the live band) plays a song and the contestants have to buzz in and name that tune
Points – player gets 1 point for every correct answer

Round 3 – Word You Believe It

The contestant chooses a category (Christmas songs, solo artists, etc) and then they sing the song in a karaoke format. After a while, the lyrics disappear and they have to finish the line with the correct lyrics
They both choose from the same list, taking in turns of choosing a category
Points – the contestant gets a point for every correct word

Winner

The winner is the contestant with the most points after all 3 rounds
They will be presented with a trophy which will have a musical reference e.g. in the shape of a microphone
The show then ends with everyone singing (including the presenter and audience) and the credits scroll with them in the background

Target Audience

Targets everyone of all ages as the songs will vary

Mainly younger people due to the age of the presenter and contestants

Commissions Unit: Brief

Today we got the brief for our other project for the next two terms. For this one we have to choose one of these options:

Work Placement option:

Students undertake a sustained period (3-4 weeks) of work placement within a media related company, or on a media related production.
This placement should be with one organisation.
You will be required to sign a learning agreement stating the nature of the placement and your hours of commitment. We will assist you in securing the position, but the onus is on the student to locate the opportunity.
You will be required to maintain contact with the course throughout the placement period, making sure that commitments to the Studio Production Unit and Theory sessions are maintained.
There will be certain dates (outlined in your learning agreement) that you cannot miss at university.

Commission option:

Students undertake a simulated professional project for an external commissioner. This can take many forms, but in the past has typically been a video project for a company or organisation. Past examples have been commercials for local companies. Promos for a rock/pop band. Information Videos for charities. We will assist you in securing the position, but the onus is on the student to locate the opportunity.  You will be required to sign a learning agreement stating the nature of the commission and your hours of commitment.
You will be required to maintain contact with the course throughout the commission period, making sure that commitments to the Studio Production Unit and Theory sessions are maintained.
There will be certain dates (outlined in your learning agreement) that you cannot miss at university.

Professional Case Study option:

Students undertake a sustained period of research into a particular professional, who is working in the field the student is personally interested in. You would be required to examine their work, and how this relates to your own practice so far. It is not a bio piece – you are challenged with finding out what it means to be professional through the investigation of this particular person. Alongside this case study, you are also required to produce a professional CV and showreel of your work.

Due to Chris and I working on the ACT Project, we have decided to take control and use this for our Commissions Unit. Chris will be editing the French film, and I'll be editing the footage from Cambridge.

Work Experience: Strictly Come Dancing

I got an inbox from Simon Rowland who was the leader of the Audience Team when I worked on Jools Holland. He asked me if I was interested in being a runner for Strictly Come Dancing, which I took with both hands!

It was filmed on the outskirts of London, which meant getting a couple of trains, which I'm very used to. I got to the studios and introduced myself to everyone (as I have never met them before). After the brief, I got a tour of the studios and then was told what I was going to do.

I spent most of the day showing different audience members where they were sitting, as the studios was split into multiple sections. This meant being loud and confident, as well as remembering the different seating arrangements (which were labelled with colours).

The day went great as I believe I performed well with every task I was given. It was a great experience to work on such a big show with A-list celebrities, and one I have gained a lot of experience from. Working in a team and customer service are definitely skills I have developed after working on this programme.

Work Experience: Dog Show in Essex

I got an email from Roy Dyer (who I worked with for my Documentary Unit) asking if I can film his big event at his Training Centre in Essex. It was a charity event, raising money for Help For Heroes, so I was very excited to work for Roy again.

The day went really well, and I filmed all the shows (which meant getting up close to all the dogs performing). Working on my own was a challenge, but one I was ready for. It helped that I knew some of the people due to working with them on one of my projects before.

Not only was it enjoyable, but I also gained lots of experience as I filmed on my own, and with a camera I have never used before. This type of experience was exactly what I needed to develop my skills and gain confidence in this field of work
