Documentary Unit: Filming

We had to alter our script on the day of filming due to the bad weather conditions. We changed the playing football outside scene, to playing FIFA 14 on the Playstation4. We achieved this by filming myself and Andy preparing to go outside with a football under my arm; then proceeding to open the door for me to then realise it's raining. It will then cut to Andy and I playing football on the PS4 instead.

This turned out really well, and I was happy with our improvisation - thinking fast on our feet.

Documentary Unit: Mini Project Ideas

We have decided to film a day in my life for our mini project. This will consist of my everyday activities/hobbies. Different camera shots will be used to make the film more interesting and captivating for the audience. For example, the toilet scene will include a POV shot; whereas the television scene will include medium shots and close-ups.

Documentary Unit: Research

After finding out we can use Roy's Cynophobia Assistance dogs, I have carried out some research:

  • Cynophobia is the abnormal fear of dogs
  • These professional canines, along with the training centre, help children become more comfortable around dogs - free of charge at Roy's training centre
  • Most common age of sufferers are young children (5-9)
  • A study done in South Africa by Drs. Willem A. Hoffmann and Lourens H. Human further confirms this conclusion for patients suffering from cynophobia and additionally found dog phobia phobia developing as late as 20
  • Animal phobias are more common in females then males
  • Roy's centre boasts a 98% success rate with making children feel more comfortable with dogs

Roy replied with this email, confirming he is willing to give us an interview as well as offering his Cynophobia Assistance Dogs. This is great because he has a lot of experience with television programmes, and he's very entertaining on and off camera.

Documentary Unit: Project Brief

Project Brief

Within your groups, you are challenged to conceive, develop, script, shoot and edit an original 10’ documentary which fits the following brief:

BBC3 –  ‘My Hero’ – stories of heroism.
      Or
Canterbury Cathedral – film for their YouTube channel about the artists and artisans work to keep the beauty of the cathedral alive

The project is split into two creative pipelines, which you must follow to complete the project successfully.

Part 1: The pitch & prep:

1)    The idea for the documentary must be finalised and presented as a 25-50 word pitch (like a tv listings billing) together with the creative vision for its visuals and storytelling approach, details of access regarding proposed characters and locations (real possibilities not just a wish list!) and explain the relevance of your choices - the pitch session on Mon 17th March.
2)    The completed draft script (typed, printed and properly formatted) and evidence of accompanying research (either on blog or hard copy) must be submitted on Mon 24th March 1500 - 1700.
3)    YOU WILL NOT be allowed to proceed into the production phase unless this is submitted by the above deadline.

Part 2: The shoot & edit

1)    Using your script as the blueprint you must then continue to research and set up your shoot arranging all relevant : scheduling, cast, crew, locations, shotlist/storyboard.
2)    The final version of the film (on DVD/CD) and all relevant research and development work (on the blog) must be submitted by 1500-1700hr on Monday 12th May.

Documentary Unit: Ideas

Our documentary will focus on either a charity or the Essex dog display team and their cynophobia dogs.

With the charity approach we will follow 2 individuals – one who currently has their ability dog and another who will receive theirs imminently.

With the Essex dog display team we will follow founder Roy Dyer as he introduces us to the dogs he works with and the children and young adults he helps overcome their fear of dogs.
